You've chosen your song, imagined the moment and perhaps wondered how you'll do more than sway from side to side. So, when should you start wedding dance lessons here on the Sunshine Coast?
We generally recommend starting around ten to twelve weeks before your wedding. This gives you time to learn, practise and feel comfortable dancing together without squeezing everything into those busy final weeks.
But you don't need an elaborate routine to have a beautiful first dance. Your ideal starting point depends on what you'd like to create, your previous dance experience and how much practice you can fit in between lessons.
If you're imagining a first dance with a little more wow, allow approximately ten to twelve weeks, usually with a lesson each week.
A showcase dance might include choreography for your full song, changes in pace, expressive moments and a memorable finish. Depending on your interests and abilities, we might also explore dips or lifts suited to you both.
The extra time allows us to build your foundations, develop the choreography and work on the transitions that help everything flow. You'll have room to become comfortable with the steps before adding those finishing touches.
This option suits couples who enjoy the idea of creating something special together and are happy to spend time practising along the way.
For a relaxed, thoughtfully choreographed first dance, we suggest allowing four to six weeks, generally with weekly lessons.
We can create a manageable routine around your wedding song, using straightforward steps, a few turns and a clear beginning and ending. The aim is for you to know what comes next while still feeling like yourselves.
Simple choreography can be romantic, playful or understated. It doesn't need to be complicated to feel special.
This is a lovely option for couples who want some structure and confidence without learning a bigger showcase routine.
If you'd prefer to dance freely to your wedding song, allow around three to four weeks, usually with a lesson each week.
Rather than learning a set sequence for the entire song, you'll learn a small collection of moves you can comfortably use together. We might work on a basic step, an easy turn, how to connect with each other and how to move between those elements.
We can also help you plan your opening and finish, giving you a little structure while leaving the rest flexible.
This suits couples who want their first dance to feel natural and spontaneous, with enough guidance to avoid wondering, "What do we do now?"
As a rough guide, these timelines assume approximately one lesson per week. However, the number and length of your lessons will depend on your chosen wedding dance package and what you'd like to achieve.
Longer sessions, previous dance experience and regular practice may change the schedule. If you're both starting from scratch, feeling nervous or hoping for more detailed choreography, we may recommend allowing extra time.
When we discuss your wedding dance package, we'll help you choose a lesson plan that suits your goals, availability and wedding date.
Lessons give you the guidance, but practising between them helps the movements become familiar.
A few short practices during the week can help you remember what you've learnt and discover anything you'd like to revisit at your next lesson. You don't need to run through everything perfectly. Even practising a turn or dancing through one section of your song is useful.
Where possible, aim to feel comfortable with your dance before the final week, leaving that time for a refresher and small adjustments.
